A straightforward guide to pneumatic, foam-filled, solid, rough-terrain, and non-marking tires for telehandler forklifts, boom lifts, and scissor lifts.

When comparing a boom lift, scissor lift, or telehandler, buyers naturally focus on working height, lift capacity, hours, engine type, and price. Tires often receive less attention, but they directly affect traction, ride quality, floor protection, maintenance requirements, transport weight, and machine downtime.

Understanding the terminology makes it easier to match a machine to the surfaces it will encounter most often. It can also help prevent an expensive mistake, such as purchasing an indoor lift with aggressive outdoor tires or selecting air-filled tires for a debris-covered demolition site.

1. Pneumatic Tires

 

Pneumatic tires use compressed air to support the machine and absorb bumps.

Pneumatic tires are air-filled tires similar in basic construction to those used on trucks and agricultural equipment. Compressed air supports the load and allows the sidewall to flex as the machine travels. That flexibility generally produces the smoothest ride of the tire types covered in this guide.

The cushioning can be valuable on telehandlers and outdoor aerial lifts because it reduces vibration as the machine crosses gravel, compacted soil, grass, and other uneven surfaces. Their tread designs vary, so not every pneumatic tire is automatically a rough-terrain tire.

The main tradeoff is puncture risk. Nails, sharp rock, metal scraps, broken concrete, and exposed rebar can penetrate the casing. Tire pressure also needs attention because an underinflated or overinflated tire may affect handling, wear, stability, and the machine’s ability to perform as designed.

Where pneumatic tires work best:

  • Outdoor construction sites with relatively manageable debris
  • Gravel, packed dirt, grass, and other uneven surfaces
  • Applications where ride comfort and shock absorption matter
  • Operations able to perform regular pressure checks and tire maintenance

Buyer note

Confirm the manufacturer’s approved tire size, pressure, load rating, and tread pattern. Tire specifications are part of the machine’s stability and performance design, not simply a matter of preference.

 

2. Foam-Filled Tires

A foam-filled tire begins as a pneumatic tire, but its air cavity is filled with a polyurethane material. Once the material cures, the tire retains a pneumatic-style exterior while no longer depending on air pressure to carry the load. A puncture may damage the outer casing, but it will not create a conventional flat tire.

This is why foam-filled tires are common on telescopic boom lifts, articulating boom lifts, and telehandlers working around nails, scrap metal, demolition debris, and unfinished structures. Eliminating flat-related downtime can be especially valuable when one disabled machine would stop an entire crew.

Foam filling adds weight and creates a firmer ride than a normal air-filled tire. Replacement and disposal can also cost more. Because tire weight and deflection are considered in the machine’s engineering, buyers should avoid switching tire types without confirming that the exact option is approved for that model.

Where foam-filled tires work best:

  • Active construction and demolition sites with sharp debris
  • Rental fleets where predictable uptime is a priority
  • Outdoor boom lifts and telehandlers that need pneumatic-style traction
  • Projects where the cost of a service interruption exceeds the higher tire cost

Buyer note

Foam-filled does not mean damage-proof. Inspect the tread and sidewalls for chunks, deep cuts, separation, and uneven wear even though the tire cannot lose air in the traditional way.

 

3. Solid Tires

Solid tires contain no air and no foam-filled cavity. The tire body is made from solid rubber or a layered rubber compound, which makes a traditional puncture impossible. Depending on the machine, the tire may be molded to a wheel or manufactured as a press-on design.

These tires are well suited to warehouses, manufacturing plants, recycling facilities, and paved yards where machines travel on hard surfaces and must remain available throughout the shift. They generally require less pressure-related maintenance and can tolerate environments that would quickly puncture an air-filled tire.

The tradeoff is reduced cushioning. Operators may feel more vibration, and the machine may experience a firmer ride over joints, broken pavement, or rough ground. Solid tires can also be heavy and may have different traction characteristics than deeply treaded pneumatic options.

Where solid tires work best:

  • Warehouses, factories, recycling operations, and industrial yards
  • Concrete, asphalt, and other firm operating surfaces
  • High-debris environments where puncture resistance is essential
  • Applications that prioritize low maintenance and consistent uptime

Buyer note

Do not assume every solid tire is intended for rough outdoor use. Check the tread, compound, load rating, and manufacturer approval for the machine and operating surface.

 

4. Rough-Terrain Tires

Rough-terrain describes a tire’s tread and intended operating environment more than its internal construction. A rough-terrain tire may be air-filled or foam-filled. What separates it visually is an aggressive tread pattern with deep, widely spaced lugs designed to bite into loose material and clear mud or soil as the tire rotates.

These tires are common on telehandlers, rough-terrain scissor lifts, and diesel boom lifts used during site preparation and structural construction. They offer better traction on gravel, packed dirt, uneven lots, and moderately soft surfaces than smooth indoor tires.

However, aggressive tires do not make unsafe ground acceptable. Soft soil, voids, steep slopes, trenches, loose fill, and saturated ground can still create tip-over or immobilization hazards. Operators must evaluate the surface and follow the machine manufacturer’s limits for slope, gradeability, tire condition, and travel configuration.

Where rough-terrain tires work best:

  • Unfinished commercial and residential construction sites
  • Gravel lots, packed dirt, and uneven outdoor surfaces
  • Material placement and elevated work before final paving is complete
  • Applications that need more tread cleaning and grip than indoor tires provide

Buyer note

Ask two separate questions: Is the tread designed for rough terrain, and is the tire pneumatic or foam-filled? Both answers matter when comparing ride quality, traction, puncture resistance, and maintenance.

 

What to inspect on rough-terrain tires:

Deep tread can hide damage, especially when the tire is packed with mud. Before purchasing or operating the machine, clean enough of the tire to inspect the spaces between the lugs. Look for missing tread blocks, deep cuts, exposed reinforcement, cracking near the sidewall, separation around the casing, and damage where the tire meets the wheel.

Compare the tires on all four corners rather than judging only the most visible one. Large differences in wear can reduce traction and may indicate pressure, steering, axle, or alignment concerns. Also inspect the wheel, lug hardware, and hub area, and verify that the installed tire size and construction match the manufacturer’s approved configuration.

5. Non-Marking Tires

Light-colored non-marking tires help protect finished indoor floors from dark rubber streaks.

Standard black tires contain carbon black, which improves durability but can leave dark streaks when a machine turns, brakes, or travels across a finished floor. Non-marking tires use a different compound—often light gray, off-white, or another pale color—to reduce that visible marking.

They are frequently installed on electric scissor lifts, vertical mast lifts, and compact articulating booms used in warehouses, schools, hospitals, shopping centers, gymnasiums, and occupied commercial buildings. Protecting the floor can reduce cleanup and prevent damage complaints after the work is complete.

Non-marking describes the rubber compound, not necessarily the internal construction. Depending on the equipment, the tire may be solid or use another manufacturer-approved design. These tires are usually intended for smooth surfaces and may not deliver the tread depth or self-cleaning ability needed for mud and loose soil.

Where non-marking tires work best:

  • Warehouses, retail stores, schools, hospitals, and office buildings
  • Polished concrete, tile, sealed floors, and gym surfaces
  • Indoor electrical, HVAC, signage, maintenance, and installation work
  • Occupied facilities where cleanliness and floor protection are priorities

Buyer note

Non-marking does not mean maintenance-free. Dirt, grease, embedded debris, or damaged tread can still soil a floor. Clean and inspect the tires before entering sensitive areas.

 

How to Choose the Right Tire Type

Start with the surface where the machine will work most often, then consider the consequences of a flat, the need to protect flooring, and the manufacturer’s approved configuration. A machine that moves between indoor and outdoor jobs may require a compromise or a more versatile tire option.


Questions to Ask Before You Buy:

  1. Will the machine operate mainly indoors, outdoors, or in both environments?
  2. Will it travel over polished concrete, gravel, dirt, mud, or demolition debris?
  3. How expensive would a tire-related service interruption be for the crew?
  4. Does the site require non-marking tires or restrict certain tread types?
  5. Are the installed tires the manufacturer-approved size, type, and load rating?
  6. Do the tires show cuts, missing tread chunks, separation, cracking, or uneven wear?
  7. If the tires are foam-filled, has the added weight been considered for transport planning?

 

Inspect the Tires Before Purchasing Used Equipment

On a used machine, tire condition can affect both the purchase value and near-term maintenance budget. Look beyond tread depth. Inspect the sidewalls, wheel assemblies, valve stems, lug hardware, and the area where the tire meets the rim. Compare wear across all tires; uneven wear may point to alignment, steering, axle, pressure, or operating issues that deserve a closer look.

Also confirm that all tires match the manufacturer’s requirements. Mixing sizes, constructions, or significantly different wear levels can affect handling and performance. When in doubt, review the operator’s manual or ask a qualified service professional to verify the configuration.
